Permanent curls and carefree hair routines

Permanent gives a beautiful look and offers the possibility to change the structure of the hair without daily styling. It also lifts the hair, which helps oily hair and adds volume to hairstyles. So you get a whole lot of carefree in your daily hair care routine.

Curls, waves or straightening

Permanent is a hair styling technique that uses chemical substances to change the structure of the hair over a long period of time. The end result can be curly or straight.

The size of the curl can vary greatly. The final result is influenced by the size of the rollers or sticks used, the strength of the perming agent and the time of application. Small rollers and long application times will produce curlier hair, while large rollers and shorter application times will produce looser waves.

Casual beach wave curls are created with large rollers and moderate perming time.

Loose curls will become even looser over time and often grow out almost imperceptibly.

The root lift is done with large permanent rollers on the top part of the hair to lift the hair from the root, and it adds volume to the hair.

Straightening perming transforms curly or wavy hair into straighter hair. The hair is combed straight using a permingsolution, the hair is treated in the same way as in a perm, but without the curl.

Permanents are not just for women, but also suit many men’s styles.

For semi-long hair, perms add flexibility and volume, while surf curls are relaxed and natural. For longer hair, the curls help the hair to hold more easily, for example with a man bun.

And, of course, there’s the curly men’s perms, which have also been popular in recent years.

Care instructions

The right home care products and habits are the key to keeping your perm beautiful. So always remember to treat your hair according to your hairdresser’s instructions to keep your curls looking their best for as long as possible.

  • Don’t wash your hair for a couple of days after perming to give your curls time to develop.
  • Permed hair stands out slightly from the scalp, so it doesn’t grease as easily. We therefore recommend that you reduce the frequency of washing.
  • After the permanent, your hair needs moisturising, so choose a moisturising shampoo and conditioner.
  • After washing, apply a leave in conditioner on the hair and scrunch the hair with a towel. Do not brush or comb your hair straight.
  • To bring out the best in your curls, apply a styling product while damp. If your hair feels frizzy or dry, choose a combination of styling mousse and conditioning oil.
  • Instead of blow-drying, we recommend that you let your hair dry freely so that the curls don’t “explode”. However, if you must blow dry, use a diffuser.
  • If you want to refresh your hairstyle between washes or after a night out, wetting your hands and squeezing your curls may be enough to get your hair in shape.

Frequently asked questions

Permanent is based on breaking the bridges that give the hair its straight or curly character and reattaching them to its new shape.

The permanent will loosen over time, but it will only leave the hair permanently by growing it out or cutting the permanent parts off.

Due to the growth of the base, it is a good idea to renew the perm regularly to keep it tidy. The appropriate interval will depend on your hair type and curls. As perming puts some strain on the hair, it is not recommended to do it too often – we usually recommend an interval of about 4 months. However, if you have short hair that is regularly cut every 4-6 weeks, you can do a perm more frequently.

After the permanent treatment, you should wait two days before washing your hair. Hair should also not be blow-dried during this time to prevent the curls from straightening.

The only way to get rid of permanent hair is to grow it out or cut your hair. Alternatively, curls can be removed with a straightening perm, but if the hair is in good condition this is not usually recommended.

Of course you can, although we don’t recommend bleaching, as bleaching and perms together are too harsh on the hair.

Unfortunately, you can’t. All those beautiful, big curly clouds you see in the pictures are invariably made with various curling irons. None of them are permanent curls.

In the case of long hair perms, the image of the desired result and the actual result of the work are often not the same.

Long hair is almost invariably desired to have a loose “celebrity curl” and it is virtually impossible to create one by perming. Long hair is heavy and will easily pull a loose curl straight. In this case, it looks as if no perming has been done at all.

Permed long hair has also often created the illusion that a long curly cloud is easy to maintain and nothing needs to be done to keep it. Unfortunately, however, the truth is quite the opposite, and long permed hair is a very demanding hairstyle to maintain.

If your hair is very damaged and in poor condition, it’s best to postpone the perm. In heavily treated hair, the crown is often in poor condition and will not curl as well as the more healthy roots.

When done with modern methods and materials, a perm does not put undue strain on the hair, but it does put some strain on it. Therefore, it is not recommended to perm too often.

Digital permanent is a structural treatment in which the curling technique is based on electrically powered thermal rollers. It adds volume, waviness and flexibility to the hair and is often applied to the crown and length of the hair, not the ends. We do not currently do digital perms.

A spiral perm is a long, spiral-shaped roll-up of the hair. It is done in very thin sections, by first “spiralling” the strands of hair and only then rolling them around the roller. As we do not do long hair perms, we do not do spiral perms.
